1: You can use it to knock over enemies.

3: By throwing the barrel at a target disc, the disc will break. A target disc is a circle with a dot in it. You can encounter such circles on bags hanging in the air or on walls. It may contain a passage or a puzzle piece.
4: This only applies to DK barrels. If you throw it and it hits something,
