Missed Opportunity for Hip Hop Fans Due to Gameplay Limitations
Def Jam Rapstar for the Nintendo Wii feels like a missed opportunity to me. While there are certainly good aspects, such as the interesting tracklist featuring both old school and new school hip hop tracks, there are too many obstacles to really call it a good experience. If you’re a big fan of hip hop and specifically of Def Jam, this game could be an interesting addition to your Wii collection. But if you’re expecting a polished experience, you’ll be disappointed.
The tracklist includes songs from both well-known and lesser-known rappers and hip hop groups, which I personally find a nice mix. Unfortunately, you have to unlock a fair number of songs by playing through the linear game, and that’s where the frustration begins. To score, you need to rap the songs using a USB microphone and follow the lyrics closely. Well-known tracks like 'Push It' are manageable, but if you don’t know a song, it becomes nearly impossible to achieve a good score. This means you can’t unlock the songs you do know, which I find very disappointing.
As a document of older hip hop music videos, Def Jam Rapstar is certainly a nice title, but the gameplay and level progression leave much to be desired. The fact that the online component no longer works makes it even harder to enjoy the game. While I like having Def Jam Rapstar in my collection, I don’t play it often due to its many downsides. It’s an interesting attempt, but unfortunately not well executed.
